What are YOUR standards?

Today is February 15 and 2010 is well underway. A month ago Tony Robbins put this video up on his blog about personal ritual, habits, standards, News Years resolutions… its really good stuff. He asks how you are doing now that it is January 15. We would like to ask… How you are doing now that it is February 15th? Will Smiths Words Of Wisdom

One of the things I say all the time to our clients, employees, children and friends is that the first step is believing you can do it. If you don’t believe you can, no else will… if you can’t imagine it, it will never be become reality.

This video has crossed our paths two times in the last 24 hours so I figured  I would share it with all of you. I have always liked Will Smith as an actor and in the last year I have learned a bit more about his personal philosophy and how he approaches life. He not only has a great personal outlook on life, he is also an excellent model for those of you looking to create wealth in YOUR life.

Another fun fact… Will Smiths son and my son share the same name… but my Jaden is two years older than his… so we did NOT name our son after him. We couldn’t even find the name Jaden in a baby name book when we chose it and now it is one of the most popular boy names… go figure!

Where have we been?

Have you ever worked on a project and it just takes WAAAAAY longer than you thought it would. Its not unusual. In fact it is much more the rule than the exception. One of the great things about something taking longer is that is usually ends up being better than it would if you just would have cranked it out.

A Bit About THE BRAND GAP

Branding is one of those terms that people don’t always understand. They hear “brand” and they think “logo” or “company,” but a brand is far more than that. It encompasses the cumulative experience one has of something—sometimes over a lifetime—and can even go beyond one person (e.g., ”My father always bought Buicks and so do I.”). In his most excellent book, “The Brand Gap,” Marty Neumeier defines a brand as “a person’s gut feeling about a product, service or organization.” The key word here is “feeling.” People’s feelings can be influenced, but in the end, they are just that, people’s feelings. An example I have involves cilantro—“the leaf of the young coriander plant; an herb in the parsley family, often used in Mexican and Middle Eastern cooking.”

When I was pregnant with our first baby, I had never consciously encountered cilantro. One day, while my husband was whipping up some homemade salsa, I got a whiff of something awful. Being pregnant, I had a low tolerance for loathsome smells and quickly reached my threshold. “What is that smell?” I demanded. “There must be something rotting in the kitchen. We HAVE to find it NOW and get rid of it!” We both searched in the regular places for rotting food—the fridge, the sink, the corners of the unwashed floor—but could not find anything. Finally, distressed and frantic, I turned slowly and suspiciously to the counter, full of fresh vegetables and herbs. I sniffed and . . . GWAAAK! There it was! That little pile of green leaves! “What IS that?” I screamed. Cilantro.


Since that time the cilantro brand has been mud for me. I cannot stand the smell, the look, the thought of cilantro, but most of my fury springs from that one, pregnancy-influenced moment. It would take a lot of healing for me to voluntarily invite cilantro into my home again (although my husband and three sons love it and have it over quite often). The point of this insightful story is that one really bad or really good experience can have a profound effect on a brand because brands rest solidly on people’s emotions. “The Brand Gap” gives readers tremendous insight into branding and all its nuances through entertaining, intelligent copy and interesting, thought-provoking design. The book may shift some people’s paradigms a little too fast, giving them a headache (think about which painkiller you would use—branding). This is because Marty is walking his own talk—he is making people take notice by rocking their boats as well as really making them FEEL, through words and images, what he is trying to say.

Why do people give away FREE stuff???

freecoverAnyone who has spent more than 10 minutes in the internet marketing world has seen an offer for FREE stuff. It’s everywhere and growing like mad. Some free stuff is excellent and worth your time and some of it is total crap.

Although its hard for some people to understand there really are individuals and companies out there giving away free content- sometimes their best content – with little or no strings attached.  Free apps on your iPhone, Free services from Google, Free Reports from Internet marketers, Free NY Times, SIMPLE SITES Quick Start Course : ) …the list goes on and on and on.

So why do they do it? What’s in it for them? I could ramble on about it, but instead I want to recommend an excellent book that just came out – FREE: The Story of a Radicle Price, by Chris Anderson. Chris is the Editor in Chief at Wired Magazine and as such has a great background and perspective on this topic.

FREE is a must read for anyone who is using the internet to make money or grow their business. In fact it really should be read by anyone who wants to do business in the 21st Century.
